What is an ISIN Number?

An ISIN Number is an International Securities Identification Number, it uniquely identifies a security. The ISIN Number is a 12 character alpha numerical code which is made up of the following:

• A two letter country code
• A nine character alpha-numeric national security identifier
• A single check digit

An ISIN Number is generally issued to securities including debt securities, shares, options derivatives and futures. The ISIN Number identifies the security. ISIN numbers are administered by a National Numbering Agency (NNA) in each of their respective countries, and they work just like serial numbers for the securities.

The ISIN standard is used worldwide to identify specific securities such as bonds, stocks (common and preferred), futures, warrant, rights, trusts, commercial paper and options.

What do I need to apply for an ISIN Number?
